PTE Core exam day: what to expect and a checklist

Knowing exactly how the day runs takes a lot of the nerves out of it. Here is what to expect at a PTE Core session, from check-in to the final section, and a short checklist to walk in ready.

Before the test starts

Arrive early with the identification your test centre requires. You will check in, store your belongings, and be shown to a computer with a headset. Take a moment to get comfortable with the headset and microphone, because clear audio matters for the speaking tasks.

The personal introduction

The session opens with a short personal introduction. It does not count toward your score and is there to help you get used to the technology and the microphone. Use it to settle your nerves and check that your voice records clearly.

The three parts

PTE Core runs in three timed parts: Speaking and Writing, then Reading, then Listening. The test moves forward through the tasks, and you cannot go back to an earlier item, so give each task your best in the moment and then move on. Keep an eye on the timing so no single task eats into the rest.

You cannot go backBecause the test does not let you return to a previous task, answer each one as it comes and let it go. Dwelling on a past item only costs you time on the next.

Your exam-day checklist

  • Bring the exact identification your centre asks for.
  • Arrive early so you are not rushing.
  • Test the headset and microphone during the introduction.
  • Speak clearly and start each task promptly.
  • Watch the clock and keep moving through the tasks.

Formats and requirements can be updated, so confirm the current test-day details with Pearson before your date. Walk in prepared and let your practice do the work. If you want a plan to get there, see our PTE Core study plan.
