PTE Core Reading: strategy for a higher band

Where Reading points come from

PTE Core Reading uses task types like fill in the blanks, reordering paragraphs and multiple choice. Some reading tasks also share scoring with other skills, so accurate reading quietly supports the rest of your result. The common thread is that you need to read quickly, understand the main idea, and answer without second-guessing.

Task-by-task strategy

Fill in the blanks

Read the whole sentence first, then choose the word that fits both the meaning and the grammar. Watch for collocations, the natural word pairs that native readers expect. The grammar around the blank often rules out two of the options straight away.

Reorder paragraphs

Find the sentence that can stand alone as the opener, then follow the linking words and pronouns that connect one sentence to the next. Reordering rewards logic, not vocabulary, so slow down just enough to track the chain of ideas.

Multiple choice

Answer from the passage, not from what you already know. The correct option is supported by the text, and the wrong ones often twist a detail. If two options look close, go back and check the exact words.

Build reading speed

Read short articles daily and practise skimming for the main idea before you read closely. Speed comes from exposure, so the more everyday English you read, the less the clock hurts you on test day.
