PTE Core Repeat Sentence: how to score higher

Repeat Sentence looks simple: hear a sentence, say it back. It is also one of the most valuable tasks, because it feeds both your Speaking and your Listening score. The trick is memory and delivery, not vocabulary.

Why Repeat Sentence matters

Repeat Sentence contributes to two skills at once, so getting it right lifts both Speaking and Listening. You are scored on the correct word sequences you produce, which means the more of the sentence you catch and reproduce, the higher your marks. Partial answers still count, so a near-complete repeat is worth a lot.

How to catch the whole sentence

Listen in chunks

Do not try to store the sentence word by word. Listen for meaningful chunks, such as a phrase or a clause, and hold the shape of the sentence in your memory. Chunks are easier to remember than a string of separate words.

Repeat straight away

The microphone opens right after the audio. Begin at once, while the sentence is fresh, and keep a steady pace. Waiting lets the memory fade.

Say what you haveBecause scoring is on correct word sequences, do not freeze if you miss a word. Say the parts you remember, in order, and you still bank points.

Build the skill

Practise with sentences that grow in length, and repeat them out loud immediately. Daily reps train both your listening memory and your delivery. Pair this with our Write from Dictation guide, since both reward sharp listening.
