PTE Core Summarize Spoken Text: template and tips

Summarize Spoken Text asks you to listen to a short talk and write a brief summary. It feeds both your Listening and your Writing score, so good notes and clean writing both pay off here.

What the task is

You hear a short recording, then write a summary within the word range shown on screen. Because it contributes to two skills, this task is worth practising well. You are judged on whether your summary captures the main points, and on your grammar, spelling and structure.

A method that works under pressure

Take notes as you listen

You hear the audio once, so jot down the key points as they come, using short words or symbols. Notes free your memory and stop you from losing details.

Write one tidy paragraph

Turn your notes into a short, structured paragraph: the main idea first, then the key supporting points. Aim for clear, correct sentences rather than clever ones.

Watch the word countStaying inside the word range matters. Too short loses content marks, and too long risks errors. A tight, on-topic paragraph is the goal.

Build the habit

Listen to short clips, take quick notes, and write a summary inside the word range every day. Check your grammar and spelling before you finish. This task pairs naturally with Write from Dictation and PTE Core Listening.
