PTE Core CLB 7: the Express Entry minimum explained

CLB 7 is the language floor for the Federal Skilled Worker stream and a common minimum across Express Entry. In PTE Core it means Listening 60, Reading 60, Writing 69 and Speaking 68, with each skill hitting its own target.

What CLB 7 means in PTE Core

CLB 7 requires at least Listening 60, Reading 60, Writing 69 and Speaking 68. Notice that the four targets are not the same number. Writing and Speaking sit higher than Listening and Reading, which surprises people who expect one round figure. As with every level, your lowest skill sets your official CLB.

Where CLB 7 is enough, and where it is not

CLB 7 meets the minimum for the Federal Skilled Worker stream and lets you into the Express Entry pool. Meeting the minimum is not the same as being competitive. Draw cut-offs are usually well above the floor, so a profile sitting at CLB 7 often waits a long time. If your other factors are average, moving up to CLB 8 or CLB 9 is usually the most reliable way to raise your CRS.

Minimum is a starting pointTreat CLB 7 as the door into the pool, not the finish line. The extra points between CLB 7 and CLB 9 are some of the easiest to earn if English is a skill you can train.

Planning your target
