PTE Core CLB 8: score requirements and who needs it

CLB 8 sits between the Express Entry minimum and the maximum points level. In PTE Core it means Listening 71, Reading 69, Writing 79 and Speaking 76, and it is the target several Provincial Nominee streams look for.

What CLB 8 means in PTE Core

CLB 8 requires at least Listening 71, Reading 69, Writing 79 and Speaking 76. It earns more CRS points than CLB 7 and is a common requirement in Provincial Nominee streams that reward stronger English. Your lowest skill still sets your official CLB, so all four scores need to clear the mark.

CLB 8 as a stepping stone

Many people reach CLB 8 across all four skills, then find one skill will not move up to CLB 9. That is a normal place to be, and CLB 8 already improves your profile over the minimum. If you are chasing the maximum language points, treat CLB 8 as the base camp and focus your remaining effort on the single skill that is short of CLB 9.

Know your goalIf a specific PNP stream asks for CLB 8, aim to pass each skill with a small buffer. If your real target is CLB 9 for the maximum points, do not settle at 8 in the skill that is close.

Getting the last few points

The gap from CLB 7 to CLB 8, and from 8 to 9, is usually one or two skills, not all four. Measure where you are, then spend your time only on the weak skill. Compare the levels side by side in the PTE Core CLB chart.
